JMP302 All Things Mail with IBM Lotus Domino

As far as I know there are two ways to configure outbound mail address formatting. One is to us the Conversion tab on a Global Domain document, the other is to set the RFC822 phrase handling on a Configuration document.

I have been using a Global Domain document since R5, and you can find numerous references to this kind of set up in the developerWorks Lotus forums. I only recently became aware of the Configuration document setting.

Could anyone explain the difference between these, which one takes precedence, and when you want to use one or the other... or both? I'm a little confused by what seems to be overlapping functionality and the Administrator help isn't very helpful.
